THE THIRD EYE

SPIRITUAL SPINE

The Inner Axis of Consciousness

The human spine is remarkable.

Physically, it supports the body. It protects the spinal cord. It also forms one of the main pathways through which the brain and the rest of the body communicate.

But Yoga looks at this central axis in another way too.

Yogic tradition speaks about a Spiritual Spine.

This is not another physical spine hidden somewhere inside the body.

It is a subtle inner axis.

An axis connected with our energy, attention, awareness and spiritual growth.

This difference is important.

The physical spine belongs to the body.

The Spiritual Spine belongs to the inner journey.

And it is along this subtle axis that Yoga speaks about the Chakras, Kundalini and the gradual movement of consciousness.

Why Do We Need an Inner Axis?

Just observe an ordinary day.

Our attention is everywhere. We see something. We hear something. We react. We remember something from the past.

Then we worry about tomorrow.

Someone says one sentence and the mind keeps chewing it for the next three hours.

This is our normal condition.

Our energy keeps moving outward.

Yoga teaches the opposite movement.

It slowly teaches us to bring attention back.

From outside to inside.

From noise to stillness.

From reaction to awareness.

The Spiritual Spine becomes an important reference in this inner movement.

Very simply, the journey begins like this:

Body → Breath → Mind → Awareness → Consciousness

But this does not happen because we read about Chakras.

It happens through practice.

Chakras Are Not Coloured Circles

Today almost everyone has heard the word Chakra.

We see seven colourful circles on posters, websites, meditation apps and wellness products.

But Chakras are much more than decorative symbols.

In the Yogic tradition, they represent subtle centres connected with different levels of human experience and consciousness.

That is why I do not like the idea of treating a Chakra like a switch:

“Press here and activate.”

Spiritual work does not happen like that.

The body has to be prepared.

The mind has to become steadier.

Attention has to become sharper.

And the seeker has to develop discipline.

This is the purpose of Sadhana.

The goal is not to collect strange experiences.

The goal is to refine the person who is having the experience.

And that person is you.

Agya Chakra: Learning to Hold Your Attention

Among the subtle centres, Agya Chakra has a very special place.

Traditionally, its location is associated with the region between the eyebrows.

Most people know it by another name:

The Third Eye.

But this expression creates a lot of confusion.

The Third Eye does not mean that another physical eye is going to open on your forehead.

And spiritual practice should not be reduced to promises such as:

“You will see the future.”

“You will see invisible beings.”

“You will get supernatural powers.”

Agya has a much deeper significance.

It is connected with attention, inner perception, discrimination and command over the wandering mind.

Try something very simple.

Sit quietly and decide that for two minutes you will think about only one thing.

Within a few seconds, the mind escapes.

A memory comes. Then a worry. Then somebody's face. Then tomorrow's work. Then an old conversation.

Your body is sitting in one room. Your mind has already travelled through ten places.

So for me, the first mystery of Agya is not supernatural vision.

It is something much more practical.

Can you hold your own attention?

First, Let the Mud Settle

Imagine a glass filled with muddy water.

Keep shaking it and you will never see through it.

Put it down. Leave it alone. Slowly, the mud begins to settle. The water becomes clearer. Our mind is very similar. Thoughts keep shaking it.

Fear shakes it. Desire shakes it. Anger shakes it. Constant information shakes it.

Phones, conversations, memories, expectations, everything keeps moving inside.

Meditation and Kriya practices slowly reduce this unnecessary movement.

And when the noise begins to reduce, something beautiful happens.

You start seeing yourself more clearly. You notice your reactions. You notice your fears. You notice your attachments. You notice how quickly your mind gets disturbed. You begin to see patterns which were always there, but which you never noticed.

And slowly, another possibility appears.

Instead of being carried away by every thought, you begin to observe the thought.

That small change can transform a person's inner life.

What Do You Really Want to Awaken?

Yogic literature does speak about extraordinary experiences and capacities that may arise through deep Sadhana.

For centuries, seekers have been fascinated by them.

But fascination can become a trap.

Suppose a person starts spiritual practice only because he wants powers.

Then what happens?

The ego simply changes clothes.

Earlier it wanted money, position or recognition.

Now it wants spiritual power.

The ego remains.

Only the desire becomes more sophisticated.

That is why I prefer asking a different question.

Instead of asking:

“What powers will awaken?”

Ask:

“What within me needs to awaken?”

Maybe awareness.

Maybe courage.

Maybe discrimination.

Maybe compassion.

Maybe emotional stability.

Maybe freedom from an old fear.

Maybe the ability to remain calm when life around you becomes difficult.

These may not sound as glamorous as supernatural powers.

But they can change your whole life.

Kundalini Is Not a Competition

The word Kundalini attracts enormous curiosity.

Naturally so.

But unfortunately, it has also created a market of shortcuts.

“Activate Kundalini quickly.”

“Open your Third Eye.”

“Awaken all Chakras.”

“Get results in seven days.”

The traditional path is not so impatient.

Anything powerful requires preparation.

You cannot pour a huge current through a weak wire and expect everything to remain safe.

The instrument has to be prepared.

And in spiritual practice, you are that instrument.

Your body. Your breath. Your nervous system. Your emotions. Your mind. Your capacity to remain steady. This is why genuine Sadhana develops step by step.

There is no shame in going slowly.

In fact, there is wisdom in it.

Step by step.     Centre by centre.    Layer by layer.     Spiritual depth does not need hurry.

Agya-Kriya-Sadhana-Deeksha

Deeksha is not simply someone giving you a technique.

It is the beginning of a disciplined relationship with that practice.

A teacher can show you how to practise. A teacher can correct mistakes. A teacher can explain where attention should go. A teacher can also tell you where imagination is taking over from actual experience. But the teacher cannot do your Sadhana for you.

That part belongs to the seeker. You have to sit.  You have to practise. You have to return again the next day.

And again.

Slowly, the practice starts becoming yours.

This is why I value regularity more than excitement.

Depth more than spectacle.

Preparation more than speed.

Experience more than borrowed belief.

This becomes even more important when the practice involves the Spiritual Spine, Agya Chakra or deeper Kriya processes.

The Real Journey Is Inward

Spiritual practice does not mean running away from normal life.

You still go to work.

You still have a family.

Bills still have to be paid.

Responsibilities remain.

People around you may remain exactly the same.

But something inside you can begin to change.

Earlier you reacted immediately.

Now perhaps you observe first.

Earlier one sentence disturbed you for a whole day.

Now perhaps you recover in ten minutes.

Earlier your mind dragged you everywhere.

Now, sometimes, you can bring it back.

These changes may look small from outside.

Inside, they are enormous.

Restlessness slowly becomes steadiness.

Confusion begins to become discrimination.

Reaction begins to become awareness.

And scattered attention slowly learns to return home.

For me, this is where the real exploration of the Spiritual Spine begins.

Not in trying to become superhuman.

But in discovering how deeply, consciously and beautifully a human being can live.

Do not hurry to awaken powers.  First awaken yourself.

May the Almighty keep us rightly guided.

Spiritually yours,

Ashok Angrish
